We lost Cecil Hurt Tuesday. The longtime Tuscaloosa News Sports Editor was the man who wrote the story on Alabama Football during my adult life. I told CBS42 in an interview, 100,000 people could watch a game, know the score and have the same thoughts on the game and then run to see what Cecil wrote in Sunday’s paper to find out the nuance and meaning of what we had all just witnessed. For our show, his friendship meant everything. Cecil would text me during segments. Sometimes to add to the conversation, sometimes to correct a fact or answer a question. Sometimes just to say he enjoyed the conversation. Cecil Hurt was maybe the wittiest, funniest man on twitter. He was always the smartest reporter in the room. He’d read books waiting for kickoff or tipoff. I think he’d read chapters during TV timeouts. You could tell in Cecil’s writing when a Coach at Alabama was going to get fired. If Cecil turned on the Coach, you knew the big boosters had turned as well. He was that connected…from Bryant to Saban. We’ll play The Iron Bowl Saturday without The Legends Pat Dye, Charles Hollis, and now Cecil Hurt. As I wrote on twitter, I pray the roses in Cecil’s eternal home are forever Crimson.
