Misery Loves Company
This week across the college football landscape, college football fans not dawning the script crimson ‘A’ have been rejoicing at the potential downfall of Alabama in the post-Nick Saban era. As someone who manages the social media pages for The Next Round, I am likely over-exposed to this, but the commentary across our platforms has led me to conclude one thing: Misery loves company.
After the greatest 16 year run in college football history, it appears that the Alabama detractors have been clambering for this very moment – the moment when the Crimson Tide program takes a step back from being the dominant force, or better yet in their minds, not even a force at all.
Here are some of the top comments I have encountered so far this week celebrating Alabama’s “fall from grace”
- “Alabama is like the trust fund kid who went bankrupt, and I hope that I can bathe in their tears” – T-Bob Hebert, Barstool Sports (LSU fan)
- “All CFB fans should pay attention. Dynasty age is long gone.” – X user (Auburn fan)
- “Beautiful, Auburn is 1-0 by the way.” – X user
- “The golden age is gone, back to the Shula days” – Instagram user (Auburn fan)
- “Alabama is cooked. SEC play is going to kill them. I love it” – Facebook user (Auburn fan)
- “It’s only going to get worse. Your charmed existence is over” – Matt Moscona, ESPN Baton Rouge
- “You gotta be sick to enjoy Alabama’s demise… I guess I am a sick man.” – X user (Arkansas fan)
- This is fun! Welcome to our world.” – Facebook user (East Carolina fan?)
- “You’re welcome college football for officially ending this” – Facebook user (FSU fan)
And hundreds of more comments dog-piling on the Tide since last Saturday, including many teams’ fans just commenting “Go _____” for their favorite team.
If Alabama doesn’t turn it around the remainder of the season, social media will likely need an “Enter At Your Own Risk” disclaimer for Crimson Tide fans.
