College World Series Preview: Can Alabama or Troy make a run in Omaha?

The road to Omaha has produced one of the most intriguing College World Series fields in recent memory. This year’s bracket features a compelling blend of traditional college baseball powers, first-time participants looking to make history, and several teams riding significant momentum into the sport’s biggest stage. From programs like Texas and North Carolina that are accustomed to deep postseason runs to newcomers Troy and West Virginia making their Omaha debuts, every team arrives with a unique story. Add in a handful of clubs that are coming off dominant Super Regional performances, and the result is a College World Series that feels wide open heading into opening weekend.

Troy vs. West Virginia

What better way to start off Omaha than with a matchup between two teams making history? Both of these teams are making their first-ever appearance in Omaha, and both have some very hot bats right now.

West Virginia needed a nail-biting victory to escape its regional, but then went on to beat the brakes off Cal Poly in the Super Regional. The Mountaineers outscored Cal Poly 29-3 in two games and boast very good starting pitching led by Chasen Cole.

Troy, on the other hand, has been one of — if not the most — surprising teams in the postseason this year. After starting the season with a losing record, the Trojans battled their way back and punched their ticket to Omaha. Troy also dominated its Super Regional, outscoring Little Rock 19-4.

While Troy may seem like a significant underdog, the Trojans have a veteran lineup that has been tested time and time again throughout these playoffs. They have shown confidence and delivered clutch hits when it matters most. If Troy can keep it close, I think the Trojans come out on top in what should be an exciting opening game in Omaha.

Ole Miss vs. North Carolina

This is another intriguing matchup between an Ole Miss team that has been battle-tested throughout the postseason and a North Carolina squad that has been one of the best and most consistent teams in the country all season. Surprisingly, though, the Tar Heels have just barely scraped by to get here.

Ole Miss is coming off an incredible Super Regional performance in which it went on the road and swept the No. 4 team in the country. The Rebels strike me as a gritty team that simply gets the job done in big moments. You can visibly tell they have a chip on their shoulder and are looking to prove people wrong.

North Carolina enters this matchup as the clear favorite and has built its success on consistency and reliability. The Tar Heels also have a knack for winning close games.

I think North Carolina comes away with the victory, but Ole Miss is definitely going to make the Tar Heels earn it.

Alabama vs. Oklahoma

Game three in Omaha features a matchup between two SEC teams that are playing very good baseball right now.

Aside from Oklahoma’s win over No. 2 Georgia Tech, I’d argue these two teams have had a somewhat easier path than most to reach Omaha. The Crimson Tide is making its first appearance in Omaha since 1999.

Alabama doesn’t necessarily dominate in any one area, but its greatest strength is its balance and depth. The Tide is a team built to compete with anyone at any time.

The Sooners, however, may be a little more battle-tested heading into this game. Oklahoma excels on the basepaths, where it can be aggressive and put constant pressure on opposing defenses without relying heavily on home runs.

I expect this to be a lower-scoring game, with the Crimson Tide coming out on top.

Georgia vs. Texas

In my opinion, this is going to be the most exciting matchup of the four opening-round games.

It’s a true heavyweight SEC showdown between the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs and the No. 6 Texas Longhorns. Georgia enters Omaha with arguably the best offense in the country, and the Bulldogs proved that in their Super Regional by scoring 24 runs against a tough Mississippi State team.

After last weekend, it’s clear that Georgia is the real deal and absolutely capable of winning this game.

Texas, on the other hand, may have the best pitching staff in the country from top to bottom. My only concern with the Longhorns is that they haven’t faced a true test in the postseason. That said, they have rolled through every opponent placed in front of them.

Georgia, however, could be a wake-up call.

Texas has also been to Omaha more than any other program in college baseball history. It’s safe to say the Longhorns are built for this type of environment and matchup.

I think this will be the most anticipated game of the opening round, and whoever comes out on top will have a great chance to win it all.
