Alabama at Mississippi State
This is one of the most intriguing SEC matchups of the weekend and a legitimate test for both teams. Alabama and Mississippi State both feature talented young quarterbacks, but neither has faced many situations quite like what awaits them Saturday. Alabama is scoring more points per game, while Mississippi State has been more productive in terms of total yardage both on the ground and through the air.
For Mississippi State, the key will be finding a way to consistently finish drives against Alabama’s defense. The Bulldogs have shown they can move the football, but simply piling up yards won’t be enough against a team as talented as the Crimson Tide. If Mississippi State can stay balanced offensively, avoid costly mistakes and turn long drives into touchdowns instead of field goals, the Bulldogs have a chance to put real pressure on Alabama throughout the afternoon.
That could make red-zone execution one of the biggest deciding factors in this game. Alabama appears to have the upper hand, but Mississippi State has shown enough offensively to make this a serious challenge for the Crimson Tide. If the Bulldogs can take advantage of playing at home and force Alabama into a tight game late, this could become one of the most interesting SEC games of the weekend.
Auburn at No. 17 Tennessee
On paper, this looks like a difficult matchup for Auburn. Tennessee is coming off a nail-biter against the No. 1 team in the country and now gets Auburn at Neyland Stadium. The Tigers enter with one loss, but their schedule has been challenging, and two of their victories have already come in one-score games.
The question is whether Auburn can finally put together a complete performance. The Tigers have enough talent to compete with Tennessee, but their execution has been far too inconsistent. If those problems continue in Knoxville, Auburn will have a difficult time pulling off the upset.
There is also an interesting connection between the coaching staffs. Auburn head coach Alex Golesh previously served as Tennessee’s offensive coordinator, adding another layer of familiarity and intrigue to an already important SEC matchup.
