Was Saturday the night Keelon Russell officially arrived for Alabama Football? The Crimson Tide found itself in another early hole, falling behind Florida State 21-6 in Tuscaloosa before the Alabama offense completely flipped the game and stormed back for a 50-36 win.
Russell delivered the best performance of his young Alabama career, throwing for 320 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions while adding an electric 57-yard rushing touchdown. Alabama finished with 567 total yards and scored on nine consecutive possessions after its slow start. Has Russell “come of age” as the Crimson Tide’s QB1 — and how high is the ceiling for Kalen DeBoer’s offense?
We also dive into the criticism surrounding Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb. The Tide is 3-0, averaging 47.7 points per game — seventh nationally — and has scored 48, 45 and 50 points in its first three games. So why are Alabama fans still frustrated with the offense? Is the concern really Grubb, or is it Alabama’s recurring slow starts?
Meanwhile, Florida beat Auburn 44-39 in a wild SEC opener at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Gators running back Jadan Baugh exploded for 162 rushing yards and three touchdowns, while Florida piled up 495 yards of total offense and 243 yards on the ground. That raises a major question on The Plains: what has happened to DJ Durkin’s Auburn defense? A unit that finished 12th nationally in rushing defense in 2025 was gashed repeatedly by Florida, and another home loss adds to Auburn’s troubling recent results at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Then we reset the SEC championship picture after a huge weekend.
Ole Miss defeated LSU 32-24 in Lane Kiffin’s much-anticipated return to Oxford. The Rebels built a 24-7 halftime lead before LSU rallied to tie the game, but Trinidad Chambliss and Ole Miss answered in the fourth quarter. A late end-zone interception by Jaylon Braxton finally slammed the door on the Tigers. Ole Miss has climbed to No. 4 in the AP Top 25, while LSU dropped to No. 10. Where should the Rebels, Tigers, Alabama, Georgia and the rest of the conference stack up now?
And one of the weekend’s biggest surprises came in College Station, where Kentucky stunned Texas A&M 31-21. The Aggies have fallen from No. 9 to No. 23 and now head to Baton Rouge for a massive Saturday night matchup against No. 10 LSU. Both teams enter that game 0-1 in SEC play, meaning one of them will already have two conference losses before October.
Plus, Jon Sumrall picked up his first SEC victory as Florida’s head coach, the Gators are 3-0 and now ranked No. 21, and the SEC race suddenly looks a lot different than it did just one week ago.
