Missing Rings: The 2016 Alabama Crimson Tide Were One Second Away From GOAT Status

Some teams are remembered for championships. Others are remembered for how painfully close they came.

The 2016 Alabama Crimson Tide belongs firmly in the second category.

Nick Saban’s tenth Alabama team entered the season as the defending national champion and somehow looked even more dominant than the group that won it all the year before. Led by a suffocating defense and a roster loaded with future NFL talent, Alabama rolled through the regular season with a level of consistency rarely seen in modern college football.

The Crimson Tide opened the year by dismantling USC 52-6 and never slowed down. They defeated 10 opponents by at least three touchdowns and spent the entire season ranked No. 1 in the country. By year’s end, Alabama was 14-0, SEC champions, and headed back to the College Football Playoff.

A generational defense

What made this team special wasn’t just the wins—it was the way Alabama won.

The defense was arguably the best of the Saban era. Jonathan Allen, Reuben Foster, Marlon Humphrey, Tim Williams, Ryan Anderson, Eddie Jackson, Dalvin Tomlinson, and Minkah Fitzpatrick formed a unit that overwhelmed opponents weekly. Alabama scored 16 non-offensive touchdowns during the season, turning defense and special teams into offensive weapons. Future NFL stars seemed to be everywhere on the field.

On offense, true freshman quarterback Jalen Hurts quickly emerged as a star. While Alabama wasn’t built around explosive passing numbers, Hurts provided another dimension with his arm and legs, helping the Tide average more than 38 points per game. Behind him, Alabama continued stacking victories and looked destined for another national title run.

The Playoff Run

The Tide handled Washington 24-7 in the Peach Bowl semifinal and advanced to a championship-game rematch with Clemson.

What followed was one of the greatest national championship games ever played.

Alabama jumped out to an early 14-0 lead, but Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson repeatedly answered. The game turned into a heavyweight fight, with neither team able to pull away. Despite Watson’s brilliance, Alabama still held a 31-28 lead late in the fourth quarter and appeared poised to capture another national championship.

Then came the final drive.

Watson marched Clemson down the field, and with one second remaining, found Hunter Renfrow for the game-winning touchdown. In an instant, Alabama’s perfect season disappeared. Clemson escaped with a 35-31 victory, denying the Crimson Tide a second consecutive national championship.

The final margin was only four points. The difference between immortality and heartbreak was one second.

Had Alabama finished that final defensive stand, the 2016 Crimson Tide likely would be discussed alongside the greatest teams of the modern era. Instead, they became one of the most talented teams in college football history to finish without a national championship ring.

Their legacy remains a fascinating “what if.”

A team that went 14-1.

A team loaded with NFL stars.

A team that dominated nearly every opponent it faced.

And a team that was just one second away from perfection.
