SEC Quarterback Battle | Alabama: Keelon Russell or Austin Mack?

Alabama: Austin Mack vs. Keelon Russell

So far this offseason, Keelon Russell has emerged as the projected starting quarterback for the Crimson Tide. Russell will be a sophomore going into the 2026 football season. He is originally from Duncanville, Texas, where he played high school football. Coming out of high school, Russell was a five-star recruit across all major outlets. He currently stands at 6’3”, 200 pounds.

I think Russell can truly perform at a high level for Alabama this season and possibly the next one as well. The only concern I see that could hold him back is his size. One of his main focuses for the remainder of the offseason should be adding weight.

On the other side of this quarterback battle stands 6’6”, 230-pound sophomore Austin Mack.

Mack has now been with Alabama for one year, transferring in 2024 to follow head coach Kalen DeBoer. While Keelon might come out as the starter this year, don’t be surprised if Austin Mack gets opportunities in package or situational plays throughout their games. I also feel that because Mack has been with DeBoer for an extended period, the coaching staff will give him every chance to prove himself—whether in practice or during the season.

After watching Alabama’s spring game, I thought both quarterbacks had solid performances. One of my biggest takeaways was that Austin Mack took more shots downfield—and not just toss-ups. He was completing 30–40 yard passes on a rope. It’s tough to say whether that was due to play-calling or Russell himself, but I didn’t see much from Keelon that made me say “wow.” I noticed a lot of holding the ball and some late throws from Russell.

All in all, I think Alabama is going to be just fine at the quarterback position this year. I believe Russell will be the outright starter, but I would love to see Austin Mack get a real shot as well.
